THE ORIGIN & GROWTH OF SOUTH CENTRAL RAILWAY MAZDOOR UNION

The South Central Railway Mazdoor Union was registered on 08.08.1966 with Secunderabad as Headquarters, in the light of the decision taken to form South Central Railway on 02.10.1966. The South Central Railway was formed with the inclusion of Vijayawada, Hubli divisions from Southern Railway and Secunderabad & Sholapur divisions of Central Railway. Our Union from its inception was affiliated to All India Railwaymen's Federation & Hind Mazdoor Sabha. The First General Council of the Union was held in Boys Scout hall in Secunderabad. In that meeting Com. S.B. Giri was elected as Zonal President and Comrade A.V.K. Chaitaynya took the post of General Secretary. The Office Bearers were given recognition on 29.10.1966. On the day of its formation the Union was having 41 branches. It soon developed into a major force with 118 branches and a membership of over 80 thousands. The Union first took up the case of those victimized employees who lost their jobs in the 1960 General Strike and a delegation met the then Railway minister Mr. S.K. Patil when he visited Secunderabad on 02.10.1966 and submitted a Memorandum demanding the re-instatement of all those employees. Even though Court did not entertain the appeals of those dismissed employees and a negative judgement came in their favour for re-instatement, earlier the union with its untiring efforts dealing the issue with the then President of India, Sri. V.V. Giri, Railway Board Chairman and even the then Prime Minister of India Smt. Indira Gandhi got re-instatement of all the 16 dismissed employees into service in October, 1971.

Again on 19.09.1968 one day token strike was held and many of the employees of Vijayawada division were subjected to harassment, suspension and break-in-service. The union was successful in redressing the grievances of all those employees and also was instrumental for payment of full wages to all of those employees for the strike period. In 1970 Com. G.M. Pathan elected as Zonal President. When the historic country-wide strike srarted on 08.05.1974 thousands of employeeswere subjected to imprisonment and dismissal from service. The Union took up the case of all those people and saw to it that no one was left without getting the job again. In 1976 Com. K.S.N. Murthy took over the Presidentship of the Zone. And in 1977 the Sholapur division was re-joined to Central Railway and Guntakal division of Southern Railway came into South Central Railway. In addition to it the Secunderabad division was bi-furcated into Secunderabad (BG) & Hyderabad (MG) paying total 5 divisions in the South Central Railway. During the Annual General council held on 17th to 19th October, 1986 the democratic forces won over the dictatorship with thumping majority making Com. N. Sudaresan as the General Secretary. With the advent of new dynamic and energetic leader Comrade. N. Sundaresan, the course of South Central Railway Mazdoor Union itself has been changed bringing many innovations in systematic and scientific manner. The setting up of a Trade Union Education Centre for educating the cadre, Constitution of Legal Cell for helping the employees aggrieved in D&AR cases, Encouragement of youth in Trade Union Activities and publication of Establishment Manual and other materials and the like were taken on a war-footing under his able leadership.
